Recap: Titans 30, Jaguars 3

Here's an extremely brief recap of the game last night.

  • The offense headed by David Garrard was terrible. He is not a good quarterback in the least bit. And I think he is mentally weak. That's right, I went there.
  • Offensive line play was ok, but considering the circumstances, they get blamed for having a bad day as well.
  • Mercedes Lewis had the worst game of his career, with only a few catches, a key drop, and a fumble near the endzone.
  • The defensive front 7 was able to contain Chris Johnson for the most part. But that secondary couldn't cover leftovers and Kerry Collins was able to exploit that for huge plays down field.
  • The three bright spots from the game: 1) Josh Scobee aka "Scobee Bryant" remains perfect on the season, scoring the teams only points. 2) The crowd was out in full force and really represented the city well until the game went truly south. 3) The hot dog I got from Teal Town was probably the best hot dog I've had in a long time.
The Jaguars have to get ready on a short week for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Halftime notes: Jaguars vs. Bills

Here are some things I've noticed in the first half of the Jaguars game versus the Buffalo Bills.

•David Garrard has bounced back from the early turnover by, once again, being very efficient. He's made some good throws but it's been run, run, run as far as play calling.

•Aaron Kampman is leading that defensive line, causing lots of problems for that bad Bills offensive line.

•Derek Cox is playing well after David Jones got burned on the TD pass to Lee Evans. Couple of pass deflections will boost the kid's confidence.

More to come after the conclusion of this game.

Quick Hits- Jags/Colts 10-03-2010

Just some quick notes from the Jaguars-Colts game from Sunday afternoon.

  • That crowd was loud and was a reason for Peyton Manning looking uncomfortable in the 4th quarter. He got jumpy and didn't look as comfortable in the pocket late in the game.
  • The Jaguars offensive line played a near perfect game. No sacks on David and bulling the Colt's d-line for 160 rushing.
  • David played an o.k. game. The game was very run heavy because of how bad the Colt's defense is in general. He made some good throws and got away with a possible game ending interception that was dropped with just a few seconds left in the game.
  • Josh Scobee is having a great season so far and might have just gotten a new nickname with his game-winning 59-yard field goal with time expiring. The nickname: Scobee Bryant.
  • Mike Sims Walker was a non-factor in the passing game, where as Mike Thomas and Tiquan Underwood made some crucial catches. He has to show up against the Bills next week, or his #1 slot might get taken from him.
The Jaguars will play the Buffalo Bills next week in Buffalo.

Recap: Jaguars/Colts 10/03/10

As I made the trek to Everbank Field with 8 Indianapolis Colts fans, and as the only Jaguar in the group, I spent the drive wondering if this team had a shot of winning. On the outside, I showed confidence to everyone who asked about predictions. On the inside, I was nervous. Which Jaguar team was going to show up? The team that came together and beat Denver, or the team that has looked below average in back-to-back 25-point loss? Well, the team that showed up was victorious in beating the Colts, 31-28.

Coming into this game, the play of David Garrard was under extreme scrutiny. To say he has been ineffective is an understatement. Today, he was effecient. Throwing a TD pass to Mercedes Lewis and scoring of a 25 yard option keeper sparked the offense. MJD had a great game against a Colts defense that is as soft as a freshly baked cookie. And the underrated thing to note is the play of the offensive line. David was not sacked one time and the tackle tandem of Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton held the two most feared pass rushers to just 3 tackles.

That secondary still got shredded by Peyton and Co. but the difference between this performance and the previous ones is in causing turnovers when it counts. Gerald Alexander got and interception and a fumble recovery, with long returns, that gave the Jaguars great field position. David Jones bit on a play and allowed Reggie Wayne to make a deep catch late in the 4th quarter that led to the tying touchdown.

But what do the best teams do? They put the ball in the hands of their best players, and Jacksonville put the game in Garrard and kicker Josh Scobee's hands. Garrard led a masterful drive down field, and taking advantage of a really suspicious timeout called by the Colts, the game fell on the leg of Scobee. He nails a walk-off 59 yard FG as time expires to give the Jags the win 31-28.

Jags fans should be excited and now the win puts the Jaguars in a good position moving into next week's game against the Bills.

Final Shots: Florida/Alabama

•If Florida is going to insist on running the spread offense, let Brantley go. He has a decent arm and is more of a drop-back style of passer, and that spread just will not be as effective with him.

•The offense will progress better if the Gators will throw the ball down field. They had some success late in the game throwing 15-20 yard passes. That would open up the run.

•That early gamble with the jump pass was silly. You are on the road, in a night game, and you stopped Alabama's first drive for 3 points... You kick the field goal and keep the momentum on your side.

That's all I have for this blowout loss the Florida Gators suffered. The Gators face LSU next week in The Swamp.

Jaguars Claim Former Bills QB Trent Edwards

Out of the few teams looking to shore up some help at quarterback, the Jacksonville Jaguars were able to claim former Bills QB Trent Edwards on Tuesday afternoon. He was released by the Bills Monday night and passed through waivers relatively quickly, where the Jaguars won the claim. Now this doesn't mean that he makes the team, but it does give the team the right to fly him down and give him a physical. Assuming that goes well, then Jacksonville takes over the remaining part of his contract, which his base bay is somewhere around $1.65 million. The Jaguars are only responsible for $1.3 million.

My thoughts:

I think this move is a good move with very low risk for the Jaguars. You bring in a guy who has a few years of experience starting and as a backup, and you don't have to give him a huge contract. Also, you have some depth at the QB position, and most importantly, a player who has the potential to push current starting QB David Garrard. I'm not saying he's should be the starter, but it should light a fire underneath #9.

Quick Hits -Tuesday 9-28-2010

  • Jaguars resign S Gerald Alexander, release CB Michael Coe and TE Ernest Wilford; other roster moves: waived QB Brett Ratliff from practice squad, signed QB Keith Null to practice squad and promoted LB Eric Alexander to active roster.
I'm not sure what to think about this change.

  • Buffalo Bills release QB Trent Edwards
I think that if Jacksonville can grab him through waivers, he would be a great pickup as a backup, and maybe push David Garrard into playing better.

  • Rumor has it that Derek Cox will start Sunday against Colts
On Gene Smiths' radio show Monday night, he expressed a mild displeasure for Del Rio's decision to bench Derek Cox for the past two games. But considering the play of David Jones and the Colts coming to town, expect Cox back in the lineup. Maybe this will be the game he gets over his sluggish start.

Quarterback Critic- David Garrard vs. Phillidelphia Eagles

Critical Thoughts of David Garrard

  • The man just does not appear to have the ability to throw the ball accurately down field. And it's not from a lack of trying, I don't think he can see himself doing it.When he's under center, and a run play is called, he doesn't audible or change the play at the line when the defense is showing 8-9 people in the box. That's hard to believe that you don't see a blitzing linebacker standing in front of you.
  • He has a very predictable passer; three step drop, slant pass to #1 receiver, or three step drop, and dump pass to Jones-Drew. If I can tell just by your formations, you better believe defensive coordinators, who get paid to watch for that, can see it too.
  • To be able to effective in this new NFL, you have to throw downfield. It opens up your running game and helps you control the clock. It works hand in hand.

I want to root for Garrard to be successful, but if he can't step up and play like the big shot NFL quarterback he given the opportunity to be, he's going to lose that job to the eventual rookie that comes into camp next off-season.

Jaguars/Eagles Recap: Nightmare at EverBank Field

It was ugly. I think almost everyone in Jacksonville would agree with that statement for the Jacksonville Jaguars play on Sunday afternoon. It was a game that was hyped, not necessarily for the Jaguars to rebound from a trouncing in San Diego, but Michael Vick and his return to prominice as a starting QB in the NFL. And how Vick showed out in the national media, crushing the Jaguars 28-3.

There is a lot you can say about this team; the quarterback is no good, the offensive line is garbage, we have no safeties, and the list continues. But this loss falls squarely on two problems, the lack of secondary help and the ineffectiveness of David Garrard. Vick tossed 3 touchdown passes, 2 to Deshaun Jackson and 1 to Jeremy Maclin. The Eagles were able to produce explosive plays downfield, in which the Jaguars secondary could not keep covered. The defensive line actually played a good game and were effective until the third quarter, when they fell apart. The offense just could not move the ball up the field through the air, gaining only 54 passing yard the ENTIRE game.

And the worst part is that #9 is to blame for that. He made extremely bad reads of coverage, he never audibles out of run plays when there is obviously 8-9 men stacking "the box", and he just made terrible throws. He's already on the hot seat with the fans, and I'm sure that seat just got warmer after that performance. Next week, the Indianapolis Colts come to town. If the Jags can't recover from this loss and come out swinging (and with a win) next week, theres no doubt that there will be major changes on this team in the next few weeks.

Quick Hits @ Half: Jaguars/Eagles

•The Rushmen are playing lights out but now you see what they mean by the secondary needing help.

•David Garrard needs to audible out of run plays when there is 8-9 men in the box. They are daring him to throw. Do it.

•The defense as a whole is doing a great job containing "Running Vick". But "Passing Vick" has burned them twice. Better coverage has to be played on Jackson and Maclin.

Keys to the Game: Florida vs Kentucky

In the first game of interconference play, Florida will get a true test of what their team is capable of. The Kentucky Wildcats are 3-0 coming into the Swamp and have some playmakers. Here are the keys for Florida to pull put a victory.

•No More Botched Snaps! The exchanges between Pouncy and Brantley need to be near flawless. Not necessarly against the Wildcats, but for preparation for Alabama Oct 2.

•Contain the Wildcat's offensive players! Believe it or not, this team can put up points. Stopping Derrick Locke(RB) and Mike Hartline (QB) will be key. Locke ran for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns last week against Akron.

•Force Turnovers! Florida has a highly ranked defense and Kentucky has not turned the ball over at all in 3 straight games. A mix of blitzing packages and zone coverages should do the trick.

Florida should win this game, predicting a score of 35-17, provided they follow these keys to victory.

Weekend Review - September 18-19

This was a strange weekend for football this weekend, with mixed results for the Florida Gators and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Florida faced off against Tennessee, giving the Gators their first true test against a conference opponent. They, once again, had a slow start. The offense had a difficult time moving the ball, gaining only 94 yards, in the first half. The Gator defense played solidly for the most part, but both of Tennessee touchdowns came on blown coverages. I think what sparked the Florida team in the third quarter was a called fake punt on fourth down, which Omarious Hines took the snap and ran for 36 yards, and set up the Gators for the go-ahead touchdown. Florida pulls out a 31-17 win and moves to 3-0.

Now the Jacksonville Jaguars had a different experience when they traveled out to San Diego to play the 0-1 Chargers. Jacksonville has had some bad luck recently traveling out the the West Coast, and this trip was no different. The Jaguars secondary, which has been a cause for concern since the off-season, showed itself as Philip Rivers shredded it to pieces, throwing for 334 yards and three touchdowns. The Jaguars offense was not without blame because there were 5 turnovers. QB David Garrard threw 4 interceptions and was benched in the fourth quarter. The final to that game was 38-13.

My Thoughts

  • Florida needs to let Brantley throw the ball to open up the running game. He’s fine under center and is getting better in the spread shotgun. But you don’t have to keep all of these dink and dunk passes. Go deep. He has the arm.

  • That Gator defense is scary good, but they HAVE to stick to their assignments. Another game with blown coverages for TD will guarantee a loss against a better team.

  • Jaguar fans don’t need to hit the panic button yet. Put it away.

  • Jaguars secondary will be addressed in the draft next year, but they have to play better than that. They did force a few turnovers, but in a game where it was wacky and crazy, you have to control yourselves.

  • Speaking of crazy, how do you not cover Antonio Gates? Crazy.

  • David Garrard showed the inconsistency that has plagued him from being a very efficient quarterback. He’ll bounce back, but believe a first round pick will be used to find his replacement.

Next week, Florida plays Kentucky in the Swamp and the Jaguars face the Eagles at EverBank Field. I’m currently working on being at The Swamp on Saturday to cover that game and the same goes for the Jacksonville game on Sunday.

Jags vs. Bucs (My Viewing Notes)

As I was watching the third preseason game for my favorite team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, I took notes on what I saw... Here's a pros and cons list of what I noticed...

Pros:
1) Offensive Line
-The o-line played particularly well in protecting the qb, giving him a decent amount of time to throw. Brad Meester at center will be the anchor for the line. Eben Britton saw his first action in the preseason, and he was a bit rusty. But he should be ready for the season opener.

2) The Rushmen
-The front four of the defensive line was penetrating the line with a high success rate, especially with the run, limiting the Bucs to very short gains via the run. They also collapsed the pocket and tried to force sacks or at least bad throws.

3) Linebacker Depth
-With all 3 defensive starters resting, the backup LBs showed up in fine force. They offered great run support for the d-line and in zone coverage. Rod Wilson and Russell Allen will be good assets for the team if there are injuries

4) Rashard Jennings
-Even though the ground game was limited, Jennings showed that he is a good complement to MJD, and he showed of some of the best "hands" on the field, catching everything thrown to him.

5) David Garrard
-David played very well, going 22 of 27, 187 yards, but the one glaring interception. I saw glimpses of 2007 David, but he regressed by locking onto a receiver in the endzone, which was read by Rudd, and the ball was picked off. He did hit 8 different receivers, so that should inspire a little confidence moving forward.

Cons

1) Secondary play
-From the get go, the Bucs were able to drive down the field through the air with a BACKUP QB like it was no problem. From Derek Cox slipping in coverage to the lack in safety play, it was not a good night for the secondary. Reggie Nelson did a little to help his cause, but will it be enough for him to make the roster?

2) Scotty McGee
He had a good 43-yard return, but on punt returns, he did not do a good job. He has to learn to Fair Catch some balls when the defense is barring down on him.

The team is starting to come together but the play at the safety positions are crucial to having a successful year. The run game will kick in on September 12th against Denver.

Let me know what you saw... maybe you agree or disagree. Leave me your comments.

Today's Thought

You spend time doing things with someone. You talk on the phone. You text all the time. Then your heart is broken by the one you cared for the most. It sucks alot, but what can you do? Just have to deal with it I guess... I just wish it wasn't so painful to deal with as you decide what you want to do. but I guess I'll be here waiting. Or not. I just don't really know how to deal.
